Sending a separate split request per expense also costs the recipients the overall picture.

The strength of dedicated services is cumulative recording with automatic math. Pile in the expenses and per-person shares and a minimal transfer plan are computed for you; detailed splits and exchange rates are handled by the tool. They earn their keep on trips and recurring gatherings with many expenses.

Settlement records are more sensitive than they look: they describe who you were with, when, where, and what you spent money on. Whether you could retrieve your records if the service shut down or you lost the account belongs to the same question.
